Summer Term 2025
The summer term introduces some more fantastic authors in English, starting with Paul Fleischman and William Grill before ending the term with C.S. Lewis and Lewis Carroll. We shall be writing adventure stories, newspaper articles, poetry and a non-chronological report.
We shall also be reading The Fossil Hunter, which is a non-fiction book all about Mary Anning and her amazing dinosaur discoveries for our daily comprehension to develop our VIPERS skills.
This links well to our science topics, which are all about investigating animals, including humans and then living things and their habitats. We shall begin by looking at the functions of teeth and the digestive system. Then explore how to classify different species; our whole school trip to The Wilderness Foundation @ Chatham Green, that will enable us to use identification keys of different animals and plants in their natural habitats.
In maths, we continue to practise our timetables regularly, ready for the MTC in June. We shall start the term by deepening our understanding of decimals, then move onto money, time, shape, statistics and ending on position & direction.
P.E. will develop skills in rounders, badminton, athletics and cricket.
Music – We have the Essex Music Service in for 10 weeks to teach the whole class to read music and play a selection of songs on the ukelele.
We shall be sketching and creating 3D paper mâché insects in art and using sewing skills in D&T to create something fit for a purpose.
Spring Term 2025
We are becoming Geo Wanderers and looking at the reasons people choose to settle in specific areas around the UK and beyond. We shall then be exploring natural disasters and the reasons the Earth experiences volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
This links well to our science topics, where we shall be investigating how we hear sounds and then moving onto understanding how electricity is created, including renewable sources and making electrical circuits.
In English, we shall be reading some wonderful books, such as The Firework-Maker's Daughter by Philip Pullman and the classic fairytale, The Selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde. We will continue to develop writing skills to create a range of different texts, from diary entries to story sequels.
Maths will continue to focus on multiplication and division with 3-digit by 1-digit numbers, before moving onto length & perimeter with rectilinear shapes and regular polygons. Then converting improper fractions into mixed numbers and finally dividing using decimals.
We also have the police visiting tomorrow to discuss how policing has changed over the years, which finishes our Crime and Punishment topic but also introduces our PSHE topic of belonging to a community and shared responsibilities.
Autumn Term 2024
This term, we shall learn all about the Romans and the expansion of the Roman Empire. Researching significant events such as Boudicca’s Rebellion and how they built a network of roads around the UK.
Following the Literacy Tree scheme in English, we shall be starting the term by reading Tar Beach by Faith Ringgold learning all about freedom and writing some lovely poetry inspired by the book. Finishing the term with Iron Man by Ted Hughes and writing a very exciting mystery narrative.
In Maths, we will be securing place value knowledge before moving onto using all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) to answer more complex questions and problem-solving. There will also be a focus on learning all the 12 x 12 times tables throughout the year to help in all aspects of maths learning. We shall be investigating states of matter in science, to understand what variables can cause some materials to change states. This will be done through experimentation and evaluating our findings to see how we can prove our findings.
We shall be practising skills in sports such as basketball as well as fitness activities to keep healthy and talking about friendships and how to be ready, respectful and safe.
