Ringgold Class (Y5) Spring Term Learning 2025-2026

Welcome to Ringgold’s Spring Overview!

A change for Ringgold with Mr Cole taking over from Mrs Harvey and Mrs Wilson in Spring Term and will begin with some gentle introductory activities to ensure everyone settles in smoothly and confidently.

English

This term, the children will explore a rich collection of texts including The Lost Thing, The Island, Freedom Bird, The Sleeper and the Spindle, and Beowulf. Through these stories, they will step into the shoes of different characters, explore emotions, and write for a variety of purposes. It promises to be a wonderfully imaginative journey.

 Maths

Our maths learning will continue to build strong mental strategies before applying them to multiplication and division, fractions, decimals and percentages. We will also explore perimeter and area, as well as interpreting and presenting statistics. The focus is on deepening understanding and building confidence across these key areas.

Science

Our new science unit, Materials, invites children to investigate the properties of everyday materials. They will compare and sort materials, explore dissolving, and use their understanding of solids, liquids and gases to separate mixtures. Along the way, they will carry out fair tests and learn about reversible and irreversible changes.

 Design & Technology

In DT, children will begin by researching frame structures—examining their purpose, materials and design features—before creating their own purposeful structure. Later in the term, they will explore mechanical systems such as levers, cams and pulleys, discovering how these mechanisms help machines to work.

Humanities

We begin the term with a geography focus on latitude, longitude and time zones. Children will learn to identify key global lines such as the equator, hemispheres, tropics, Arctic and Antarctic Circles, and the Prime Meridian. They will use a range of maps and develop an understanding of cartography and how geography shapes daily life around the world.

In the second half of the term, our attention turns to history, where we will explore leisure and entertainment through time.

Music

This term celebrates the joy of music and words. Children will revisit some Italian musical terminology, improvise musical conversations, try their hand at scat singing inspired by Ella Fitzgerald, and compose music influenced by poetry.

PE

Outdoors, our focus will be football—developing fundamental skills and gradually moving towards tactical and positional play. Indoors, we will explore yoga, with an emphasis on breathing, calmness, dynamic stretching and traditional poses. Children will also learn about the physical and mental benefits of yoga.

Spanish

With Señorita Perez, the children will learn about Three Wise Men Day, practise telling the time, and explore vocabulary linked to daily routines and reflexive verbs.

RE

Our RE learning begins with the question “What difference does the resurrection make to Christians?” In the second half term, we will explore “How do Hindus make sense of the world?”—encouraging thoughtful discussion and reflection.

Computing

This term’s computing work centres on programming. Children will use physical computing to explore selection in programming through the Crumble environment. They will learn how to connect and program a microcontroller to operate components such as LEDs and motors, and use conditions to control the flow of actions. Later in the term, they will investigate databases and how they are used to store and organise information.

PSHE

Our PSHE themes are Diverse Britain and Digital Wellbeing. Children will learn about staying safe online, managing their digital lives responsibly, understanding money matters, and recognising the importance of caring for our planet.
