Summer Term 2026
The summer term introduces some more fantastic authors in English, starting with Paul Fleischman and Janina Ramirez before ending the term with Helen Ward and Ted Hughes. We shall be writing historical fiction and mystery stories as well as non-chronological reports and explanation texts.
We shall also be reading The Fossil Hunter by Kate Winter, which is a non-fiction book all about Mary Anning and her amazing dinosaur discoveries, and The Wild Robot by Peter Brown during our comprehension lessons.
These both link to our science topics, which are all about investigating ‘Animals; including Humans’ and then ‘Living Things and their Habitats’. We shall begin by looking at the functions of teeth and the digestive system. Then explore how to classify different species. We shall be exploring the wildlife around the school and thinking about how to sustain their habitat for the future.
Humanities – We shall continue to discover more about how the Anglo-Saxons, Scots and Vikings lived and create our own settlement and then explore our local history. After half-term, we swap to Geography to understand Climate Zones and Biomes and the impact of deforestation on the planet.
Maths – We continue to practise our times tables regularly, so we are well-prepared for the MTC in June. We shall start the term by deepening our understanding of decimals, then move onto money, time, shape, statistics and ending on position & direction.
P.E. – Focus will be on developing skills in cricket, badminton, athletics and rounders.
Music – The children will become songwriters this term. Creating their own melodies and then writing their own lyrics to a well-known song. Planning how this could then be performed to an audience for a show.
Art and D&T – We shall be sketching and creating 3D paper mâché insects in art and using sewing skills in D&T to create something to use for a purpose. The children will decide the theme for this project.
Spring Term 2025
This term we shall begin our new book in English; Granny came here on the Empire Windrush by Patrice Lawrence and writing factual reports. We shall then be creating our own nonsense poetry, playscripts and sequence stories inspired by authors Lewis Carroll, Grahame Baker-Smith and Faith Ringgold.
In our reading comprehension, we continue to read Phillip Pullman’s Firework Maker's Daughter and will then move onto The Fossil Hunter by Kate Winter, based on the true story about Mary Anning.
In maths, we shall begin to multiply and divide 3-digit by 1-digit numbers. We shall also be exploring length & perimeter before moving onto fractions and decimals. We shall continue to use TTRS every week to build confidence for the Multiplication Table Check (MTC) in June.
Science links with both Geography and Design & Technology (D&T) this term. First, investigating the water cycle and exploring water and rivers in Geography. Then moving onto electricity and how to build circuits, applying this knowledge in D&T where they will make their own torches.
We shall be moving on from the Romans in History to understand how the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings impacted Britain. We have booked an immersive workshop with the brilliant, Those History People, where the children will complete lots of activities and experience what life was like in that era for the day.
P.E. days continue to be on a Tuesday and Friday and we shall be learning new skills in dance, hockey, gymnastics and handball.
Autumn Term 2025
We start the term by learning all about settlements and what resources are needed to make them sustainable. We shall then move onto the Roman’s and the spread of the Roman Empire. Researching significant events such as Boudicca’s Rebellion and the building of the network of roads around the UK.
Following the Literacy Tree scheme in English, we shall be starting the term by reading The Baker by the Sea by Paula White, which is based on a true story about her grandfather. We shall explore the roles within a small fishing village and write our own tourist brochure. For our reading comprehension we shall be ready The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis and venture into the wonders of Narnia.
In Maths, we shall be securing place value knowledge before moving onto using all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) to answer more complex questions and problem solving. There will also be a huge focus on learning all 12 multiplication tables, which helps children develop understanding in all aspects of mathematics.
Science will be investigating states of matter to understand what variables can cause some materials can change states.
In art, we are sketching real life objects, with an autumnal theme then in design & technology the children will get the chance to create their own flavour bread based on ingredients available during the Roman era.
P.E. will include sports such as basketball, tennis and fitness activities to stay healthy. Lessons will normally take place on Tuesday and Friday afternoon.
We also have Essex Music Services teaching the whole class to play the ukulele till the end of November.
