Ringgold Class (Y5) Autumn Term Learning 2026-2027

Welcome to Ringgold's Autumn Overview!

English

This term in English, pupils will continue to develop their writing skills through the Literacy Tree approach, exploring a range of rich and inspiring texts. In Autumn 1, children will begin with Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly, discovering the remarkable achievements of pioneering mathematicians and scientists whose work helped shape space exploration. This learning will be complemented by Curiosity: The Story of a Mars Rover by Marcus Motum and The Race to Space by Clive Gifford, providing exciting opportunities for both narrative and non-fiction writing linked to science and history. Reading lessons will also feature When the Stars Come Out by Nicola Edwards and Lucy Cartwright, encouraging pupils to develop their comprehension, inference and discussion skills.

In Autumn 2, pupils will explore The Man Who Walked Between the Towers by Mordicai Gerstein and The Lost Happy Endings by Carol Ann Duffy, using these texts as inspiration for imaginative and descriptive writing. Alongside this, children will deepen their understanding of Britain's diverse history through Bright Stars of Black British History by J.T. Williams and Black and British: A Short Essential History by David Olusoga. Throughout the term, pupils will focus on writing for a range of purposes, carefully considering audience, vocabulary choices, grammar and authorial intent while developing confidence as both readers and writers.

Maths

In mathematics, pupils will begin the year by developing a secure understanding of place value, working with increasingly large numbers and applying their knowledge to solve a range of problems. They will then move on to addition and subtraction, developing efficient calculation methods and reasoning skills. As the term progresses, children will explore multiplication and division, building fluency with key number facts and formal written methods, before beginning their work on fractions. Throughout the term, pupils will be encouraged to explain their thinking, solve problems and apply their mathematical understanding in a variety of contexts.

Science

This term, pupils will explore two exciting areas of science: Earth and Space and Forces. In Earth and Space, children will learn about the movement of the Earth, Moon and other planets within our solar system and investigate how these movements create day and night. Later in the term, pupils will study forces, exploring concepts such as gravity, friction, air resistance and water resistance. Through practical investigations and scientific enquiry, children will develop their understanding of how forces act upon objects and the impact they have on everyday life.

Art & Design Technology

In Art, pupils will begin by studying plants and flowers, developing their observational drawing skills and exploring techniques such as line, shape, tone and colour. Children will have opportunities to create detailed botanical artwork inspired by the natural world. During Autumn 2, the focus will shift to North American art, where pupils will examine artistic styles, influences and cultural traditions from across the continent. They will build on their creative skills while learning about the significance of art within different communities and cultures.

Humanities

In geography, pupils will investigate mountains, learning how they are formed and exploring some of the world's most significant mountain ranges. They will consider the impact mountains have on climate, wildlife and human settlements while developing their map-reading and geographical enquiry skills.

During Autumn 2, history lessons will focus on Ancient Greece. Children will explore the achievements and legacy of this influential civilisation, including Greek culture, democracy, philosophy and the Olympic Games. They will also investigate how Ancient Greece has shaped many aspects of modern life.

Music

This term's music learning focuses on Rhythm Builders. Children will develop their understanding of pulse, rhythm and timing through a range of practical activities, performances and compositions. Pupils will explore how rhythm forms the foundation of music, building confidence in performing both individually and as part of an ensemble while developing their listening and appraisal skills.

Physical Education (PE)

In PE, pupils will develop a range of skills through both indoor and outdoor activities. During Autumn 1, indoor lessons will focus on gymnastics, where children will refine their balance, coordination and control while creating and performing sequences. Outdoor lessons will focus on athletics, helping pupils develop speed, stamina and technique.

In Autumn 2, indoor PE will focus on line dancing, encouraging rhythm, coordination and teamwork. Outdoor lessons will introduce basketball, where pupils will learn key skills such as passing, dribbling, shooting and tactical play while developing sportsmanship and cooperation.

Spanish

In Spanish, pupils will begin by learning how to use infinitive verbs to express activities they would like to do. They will develop their vocabulary and sentence-building skills while practising speaking, listening, reading and writing in Spanish.

Later in the term, children will learn about the Mexican celebration Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), exploring its cultural significance and traditions. They will also learn how to ask and answer questions about themselves and investigate how Christmas is celebrated in Spain, broadening their understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures around the world.

Religious Education (RE)

In RE, pupils will begin by exploring the question, "Is believing in God reasonable?" Through the study of different worldviews, including Humanism, children will consider a range of beliefs and perspectives while developing their skills of discussion, reflection and critical thinking.

Later in the term, pupils will investigate the question, "How has belief impacted on music and art through history?" They will examine how religion and belief have inspired some of the world's most significant artistic and musical works, considering the influence faith has had on cultures throughout history.

Computing

This term's computing lessons begin with Systems and Networks, where pupils will learn how computer systems work together and develop their understanding of digital networks and communication. They will explore how information is shared online and consider the importance of using technology responsibly.

In Autumn 2, children will focus on Creating Media: Video Production. They will learn how to plan, film and edit videos for different audiences and purposes, developing both their technical skills and creativity while producing their own digital content.

PSHE

In PSHE, pupils will begin with the unit TEAM, exploring the importance of cooperation, communication and working effectively with others. Through discussion and collaborative activities, children will develop the skills needed to build positive relationships and contribute successfully to group situations.

Later in the term, pupils will study Think Positive, focusing on emotional wellbeing, resilience and positive thinking strategies. Children will learn practical ways to manage challenges, build confidence and develop a healthy mindset that supports both learning and personal growth.
