Autumn Term 2025
We have a lot of exciting, new learning planned for the Autumn term. Here is a peep inside our curriculum.
This first half term in English, we are going to be conducting a book study of The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick. Also, in this half of the term, we will explore the novel Resist by Tom Palmer. This will link to our history work on WWII.
In the second half of the Autumn term the class will explore the novel Windrush Child by Benjamin Zephaniah. Finally, the children will examine The Hidden Forest by Jeannie Baker.
Mathematics this first half-term will further secure and deepen the children’s understanding of Place Value, Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division along with Mental Calculations. In the second half-term the class will focus on Fractions and Converting Measures.
In science, our focus is Evolution and Inheritance. The children will begin by defining the words, evolution, inheritance and adaptation, considering how living things have evolved over time. They will also conduct research into fossils and find out about key scientists Charles Darwin and Mary Anning in relation to this topic.
In History, the theme will be WW2, focusing on the outbreak of the War, life on the home front, entertainment, The Battle of Britain and the role of the armed forces.
In Geography the focus is on Rivers and Coasts. The children will learn the features of both before conducting a study into problems faced by rivers and coasts such as flooding, erosion and pollution.
RE studies this term will ask the class to consider 2 key questions: How and Why does Religion Bring Peace and Conflict? And how do Buddhists explain the Suffering of the World?
E-Safety will be the main focus of computing studies in the first half-term while we consider different systems and networks we can use to work together. In the second half-term the class will identify what makes a good web page and use this information to design and evaluate their own website using Google Sites. Throughout the process children will be taught about copyright and fair use of media, as well as the aesthetics of the site, and navigation paths.
Performing rhythms expressively is a focus for the term in music and the children will explore rhythmic poems and songs such as Plastic Wrap and 1066 Rap. Throughout the term, the children will listen to rhythms from around the world, such as djembe drumming from West Africa, Latin American rhythms such as tango, salsa and samba and Konnokal from South India. Using songs as inspiration, the children will learn to play polyrhythms and experiment with creating different polyrhythmic textures.
In art, the class will learn about pop art through an exploration of the works and techniques Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Roy Lichtenstein. They will explore the colour wheel and consider how contrasting colours can be used for effect.
In DT the children will explore cams. They will experiment with different shaped cams, noting the different movements that can be made. They will then design and make a moving toy, using a cam for an intended audience.
In PSHE, the class will study entitled VIPs (Very Important Persons) which will focus on relationships. Children will identify who their VIPs are within their families and friendship groups and how important kindness and respect are within these relationships. The children will also look at the secrets and dares as well as healthy and unhealthy relationships.
The second half-term will see us looking at Safety First. The children will consider what it means to take responsibility for their own safety, including the decisions they make and how they can stand up to peer pressure in a range of situations. They will assess the risk associated with different situations and learn about what to do if they feel in danger.
In Spanish children are learning about themselves and also the weather. In the second half term the focus will be The Day of the Dead, Oher Countries and Christmas Spanish style.
Our PE days are on Tuesdays and Fridays. The class will develop their Basketball and Badminton skills along with Fitness and Dodegball in the second half of term.
