Ringgold Class - Year 5

Faith Ringgold: American People - MCA Chicago

Ringgold – Y5 SUMMER TERM

Hi everyone – two terms down, one to go! 😊

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter break, spending time with your families and eating plenty of chocolate. It has been wonderful hearing the children recount their experiences and sharing with each other what they got up to. We have some new and exciting topics coming up as well as an exciting trip to the London Science Museum in June. Additionally, we will have a class assembly and we will of course be inviting our adults in to celebrate some of our hard work and learning this term. We will keep you posted with dates closer to the time!

Here’s hoping that the weather finally plays ball, allowing us more opportunities to get outside of the classroom, exploring and learning around our fantastic school grounds.

Here is a peep in to what the children have coming up…

In English we will start the term with a story by Gillian Cross called ‘The Odyssey’. This is an exciting adventure text that follows a hero (Odysseus) battling great monsters, gods and mortals on his voyage home to Ithaca. We will then read and explore ‘The Sleeper and the Spindle’ by Neil Gaiman, an interesting text based around the theme of fairy tales and hopefully finish the term reading ‘Beowulf’ by Michael Morpurgo, an intense legend/folklore themed story that will be sure to hook the children in. A few examples of the writing we’ll explore within these texts are diary entries, letters of advice, obituaries, creating detailed character and setting descriptions, writing formal and informal letters and creating exciting advertisements.

In Maths this term we’ll be focusing in the following units of work through our White Rose scheme of work:

· Perimeter and Area

· Statistics

· Shape

· Position & Direction

· Decimals and

· Converting Units

In Science we will be covering:

· Properties and Changes of Materials. This unit will teach your class about different materials, their uses and their properties, as well as dissolving, separating mixtures and irreversible changes. The children will sort and classify objects according to their properties. They will explore the properties of materials to find the most suitable material for different purposes.

For PE this term we will – weather permitting – work around the following topics:

· Indoors (Wednesday AM) – ‘Fitness’ & ‘Hockey’

· Outdoors (Thursday PM) – ‘Athletics’, ‘Football’ & ‘Cricket’

In Geography our unit will be ‘Exploring Eastern Europe’

In History we will be exploring the ‘Ancient Greece’

In Art our unit will be ‘South and Central American’

In Design & Technology our units will be ‘Mechanical Systems – levers and pulleys’

In RE we will be exploring and unpicking two questions over multiple weeks:

1) How do Hindus make sense of the world?

2) Why should we be good?

In PSHE we have two units to explore:

· Growing Up & My Body

· Thinking Positively

Please keep up with the weekly home learning, the daily reading and access and play as much Times Table Rockstars as possible. I want an entire class of ‘Legends’ by the time we break up! Thanks for all your continued support.

Mr S 😊
